Marine-based Labs

starfish = Features live animals
Build a Habitat
(Grades K-2)
starfish
This class introduces younger students to marine animals as they create miniature ocean habitats complete with snails, crabs, barnacles, food and shelter, in this hands-on lab. 1 hour
Animal Adaptations
(Grades 3-12)
starfish
Students observe marine organisms, comparing and contrasting the different adaptations for three marine habitats. Students will examine clams, mussels, barnacles, urchins, and sea stars, and observe the animals’ responses to different stimuli in this laboratory.

1 hour

Crab Lab
(Grades 3-12)
starfish
Students will work with a variety of live crabs, shrimp, and other crustaceans in this hands-on lab. Students will investigate classification, anatomy, and adaptations of each of these animals. 1 hour
Squid Dissection
(Grades 4-12)
Come and learn about these molluscs from the inside out. Investigate both external and internal anatomy while studying how these invertebrates are adapted for life in the sea. Students will also learn how to use dissection tools and proper dissection techniques.

1 hour

Fish Dissection
(Grades 4–12)

During this hands-on program, students will learn about the external and internal anatomy of various species of bony fish. Through dissection they will gain a better understanding of the purpose of various organs, and by studying some preserved specimens they will learn the differences between cartilaginous and bony fish. 1 hour
Assemble a Whale
(Grades 5–12)
Work together as a class to assemble the skeleton of a 16-foot-long Cuvier’s beaked whale. Students will also learn about the differences and similarities of toothed and baleen whales using real whale teeth, baleen, and other biofacts. 1 hour
Rocky Intertidal Lab
(Grades 5-12)starfish
Discover the rocky intertidal habitat and the creatures that live there. Learn about the environmental forces that make this ever-changing habitat a challenging place to live. Understand relationships among living things in this complex environment and how factors change the balance of populations. Learn how and why scientists study the population dynamics of the rocky intertidal zone. 1 hour
Sandy Beach Lab
(Grades 5–12)
Explore a sandy beach, without the weather, in this laboratory program. Examine sand samples from Oregon and compare them to other beaches of the world. Discover the many creatures found on sandy beaches. Learn how they survive in an environment where the sands are constantly shifting with the waves and currents. 1 hour
Invertebrate Taxonomy
(Grades 9-14)
starfish
Use live animals and dried specimens to put these invertebrates in their place. Students will review classification and examine characteristics and taxonomic relationships of the phyla Porifera, Cnidaria, Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Echinodermata. 2 hours

Outdoor Adventures

(Dress for the weather, boots or old shoes recommended for all outdoor activities)

Extended Estuary Investigations
(All ages)
starfish

Same content as Estuary Investigations (above) but
students get more time to explore!

Sandy Beach Investigations
(grades 4-12)
starfish

Coastal Forests Investigations
(Grades 4-12)
Travel to Mike Miller County Park (1.5 miles south of Hatfield Marine Science Center) to study a remnant stand of old-growth forest. Students will identify wildlife, forest plants and study a brackish lake. 2 hours
