Girl Scouts
THESE PROGRAMS CAN BE SCHEDULED ON OTHER DATES SUBJECT TO INSTRUCTOR
AVAILABILITY
Most classes are designed to provide credit toward Try-Its, Badges, and
Interest Project Patches.
- Cost: $10.00 per girl per session with a $60 minimum,
if scheduling for another day. (as of July 1, 2008)
- Oregon Sea Grant Ocean Studies event patches are included, but additional
patches can be purchased for $1.50 each.

November 8, 2008 Wildlife
Cadette/Senior IPP (11:00-1:00)
This program satisfies Skill Builders 1-3. Technology 1, 4, Service Project 4, Career Exploration 1, 4.
We will travel to the estuary and observe animal in the lab. The estuary is muddy, so bring extra socks and shoes.
Girls should wear waterproof boots/gear and prepare for weather.
March 7, 2009 Columbia River Council Badge -
Oceanography Junior Badge (10:00-12:00)
We will satisfy the requirements necessary for this badge.
Should wear wading shoes, and dress for the weather.
March 7, 2009 Water Everywhere
Brownies (1:00-3:00)
This program will help to satisfy the Try-It. Using plankton nets, hand lenses, and microscopes, we will collect and explore the importance, characteristics, and the organisms living in water. Be sure to dress for the weather.
April 4, 2009 Water Wonders
Junior Badge (10:00-12:00)
This program satisfies requirements 1,4,5,7,9. Service project needed to complete badge requirements.
Each girl will get the opportunity to use a plankton net to gather samples for class. We will then continue our investigation in the lab with the use of microscopes, dissection scopes, and hand held lenses. We will be able to closely observe some of our marine invertebrates and discuss their adaptations to their environment. We will explore the chemical and physical aspects of saltwater as compared to fresh water. Prepare for weather, we will go outside.
April 25, 2009 From Shore to Sea
Cadette/Senior IPP (3 hour program 9:00-12:00)
This program satisfies Skill builders 1, 2, 3, 5 Technology 2,5 and Career Exploration 1,4 and part of 2 Service project needed to complete IPP. Girls will learn how animals have adapted to their various marine environments by handling and observing behaviors. Round table discussion of overall impact of humans on our environment and the influences of the Pacific on our lives and the globe. Weather Permitting, we will travel to local beach for geology and physical oceanography
Girls should wear waterproof boots/gear and prepare for weather.
M ay 9, 2009 Eco-explorer
Brownies (10:00-1200)
This program will help to satisfy the Try-It. We will explore the salt marsh, build a habitat for live sea animals and learn about food chains. Be sure to dress for the weather.
**A Walk on the Wild Side
Juniors
This program will satisfy most of Earth Connections and Wildlife Badges.Satisfies 1,4,5,6,7,9 of Wild life badge and 1,3,4,7,8,10 of Earth Connections.
This class will travel to Mike Miller Educational Forest to investigate a beautiful stand of old-growth coastal forest. We will learn about the different forest species and exactly what constitutes an old-growth forest. We will study individual trees, identify wild species and learn about the importance of these unique habitats to wildlife and ourselves. This is a one-mile hike on a fairly easy trail with some inclines.
Should wear appropriate hiking shoes/gear for the weather.

ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES
Fish ID and Printing
All Age Groups
In the event of inclement weather (horizontal rains), or if your troop wishes, the girls will learn to identify some of the common Oregon species of fish. They will draw illustrations of fish in their Fish ID journals, and then fish print either on paper or their t-shirts. (They will need to bring their own t-shirts or pillowcases)

This program helps fulfill some of the requirements for All About Birds IPP.
The coast is a great place to observe the unique bird life of Oregon. We will learn how each species fits into the coastal
food chain and how they have developed specialized adaptations for survival in their native habitats. This class will involve a short hike to the estuary to observe migrating species and then back to the classroom to make bird feeders.
Don't forget your binoculars and dress for the weather.
