2008 Summer Day Camp

Coastal Adventures 1

Ages:7-9
Dates:June 23-26, 2008 (Mon-Thu)

Coastal Habitats Hunt

This hands-on day camp will introduce campers to the plants and animals that live in the marine habitats of the central Oregon coast. With a different outdoor field adventure each day, campers will investigate life on the rocky shore, coastal forest, marsh, mudflat, and sandy beach. Participants will work in teams to collect live specimens and to build appropriate habitats in HMSC’s wet labs. Cost: $130.00

Coastal Adventures 2

Ages: 7-9
Dates: Juy 21-24, 2008 (Mon-Thu)

Crusty Crustaceans

Campers will discover characteristics that help crustaceans survive by actively exploring tide-pools and mudflats, collecting and observing plankton, and creating a mini-exhibit about crustaceans.  Participants will work directly with scientists to conduct research on crustaceans and will take part in one of HMSC’s most popular activities -- crab races. Cost: $130.00

 

Marine Science 1

Campers ages 10-12
Dates: July 7-10, 2008 (Mon-Thu)

Coastal Habitats Hunt

Campers will explore the estuary, rocky shore, sandy beach and the coastal forest. In teams, they will collect animals and build habitats in HMSC’s wet labs, demonstrating their understanding of habitat and community. Cost: $130.00

 
 

Marine Science 2

Campers ages 10-12
Dates: August 4-7, 2008 (Mon-Thu)

Simply Symbiotic

Our explorations will take us on a hunt for all the organisms that just can’t live without each other.  While exploring the rocky intertidal, estuary, sandy beach and the coastal forest of Cape Perpetua, campers will be introduced to the plants and animals that live in symbiotic relationships.  Campers will also participate in a symbiotic scavenger hunt. Cost: $130.00

Marine Biology

Ages: 13-17
Dates: July 15-18, 2008 9

Inside, Outside, Upside Down

This camp will focus on dissection.  Campers will explore the sandy beach, estuary and tide pool habitats, looking at animals to gain a better understanding of form, function and their ability to survive. A kayaking excursion is included. Cost: $140.00

Oceanography

Ages 13-17 
Dates: July 28-31, 2008 (Mon-Thu)

ROVing Robotics

This camp is designed for campers serious about scientific research relating to physical oceanography. Each team will construct a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), develop research projects for the instrument and conduct bottom trials in the lab and off the dock.  This year’s camp will also include a kayak excursion and a trip to the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Lab in Corvallis. Cost: $140.00

Registration includes all intructional materials, plus a T-shirt designed by the campers themselves. Lunches are not included.
